J.O. Stickley & Sons ( Highway Motors’ parent company) was started in 1929 on Main St. in Harrisonburg. By 1946 the business had grown to where it was necessary to separate the farm implement and truck business. The new company was called Truck Sales Inc. The officers were J.O.Stickley, Dan C. Stickley and C.W. Carmody. In 1949 the dealership moved to US 11 north of Harrisonburg. In 1950 Truck Sales Inc. acquired the Chrysler–Plymouth automobile franchise and changed its name to Highway Motors Inc. to better describe the services offered.
Highway Motors continued to grow throughout the next three decades under the direction of Elmer Kramer and Dave Turner. In 1984 William F. Mohr of Richmond bought the corporation from Dan C Stickley, Elmer Kramer, and David Turner. Thomas W. Mohr joined the company as president in 1985. A strategic move was made in 1990 when they sold the Chrysler-Plymouth business to Hartman Motors, a Harrisonburg auto dealer, and concentrated on the medium and heavy truck business. The car shop was torn down and a modern 12 bay truck shop was built in its place signifying a major commitment to their truck customers. Another important milestone came in 1994 as HMI acquired the Roanoke market with an additional 14 counties. They are now responsible for 29 counties stretching along 300+ miles of I-81 in western Virginia including the cities of Winchester, Leesburg, Harrisonburg, Charlottesville, Culpeper, Covington, Lexington, Martinsville Roanoke, Salem and Blacksburg. This expansion required the opening of a new location in Roanoke. Thomas W. Mohr bought the corporation from his father in December 1998. The latest expansion was the purchase of Fleet Maintenance Service in Winchester Va. This acquisition provided yet another parts and service location on the I-81 corridor. In order to better serve their customers and provide additional transportation services they opened a full service leasing and rental company operating under the name of Highway Motors Idealease. They currently have 140 power units and 11 trailers in service. Highway Motors Idealease operates out of Harrisonburg, Winchester and Roanoke Va.
Highway Motors currently has 120+employees at four locations in Harrisonburg, Winchester and Roanoke VA They are a franchised dealer for International Truck and Engine Corporation whose world headquarters are in Chicago Il. International is a leading producer of heavy and medium duty trucks and school buses and a worldwide leader in the manufacture of mid-range diesel engines produced in the range of 160-340 horsepower for the International brand.

Striving to increase driver satisfaction isn’t just about keeping drivers happy—it’s also about keeping them healthy, and in turn, more productive. Perhaps the easiest way to improve a driver’s well-being is to make him, or her, more comfortable while out on the road. And the best way to ensure maximum comfort is to provide a seat that fits his or her body type. However in Part 1 of our two-part conversation, Dr. H. Lenora Hardee, International’s Manager of Human Factors and Ergonomics, explains that simply specing a seat with ergonomic features is not enough. You have to make sure drivers know how to actually use them.
I’ve read that 40 percent of all truck drivers suffer from chronic back problems. How much of an impact can the proper seat adjustment have in regards to driver comfort?
It can have a huge impact. One of the major things that drivers complain about with seats is lumbar support. The lumbar is the lower part of the back. You see, when you sit, your pelvis rotates rearward. This causes your lower spine to flex and puts pressure on your lower disks. Over time this can lead to pain and even ruptured disks. A good seat will curve outward at the point where your lower spine contacts it. This curvature, or lumbar support, helps to straighten your lower spine out, making your lower back more comfortable and, potentially, healthier. Some seats have lumbar supports that adjust in and out. This can make it easier for each driver to customize the amount of pressure on his or her lower back.
The height of the lumbar support is really important as well—it has to come out far enough, but it also has to be located at the right height. You should be able to adjust the lumbar support, to move it up and down and in and out. Since there’s so much variability in people’s sizes, you have to make sure it works properly for you.
Is there anything else drivers or fleet managers should know regarding lumbar support?
Proper lumbar support can also make your pelvis more stable in the seat. Anything that stabilizes your pelvis and hips in the seat will help your seatbelt fit better. So, you get kind of a double-whammy benefit from a good lumbar support feature in a seat.
But having a seat with enough seat-back recline is also extremely important to sitting comfort. If the seat back is too upright, it requires the driver’s back muscles to work constantly to keep him or her from falling forward, leading to back fatigue over time. To counteract this, the driver will shift his or her hips forward in the seat. This will then create two different comfort problems: 1) the driver may now feel like he or she doesn’t have enough leg room, and 2) the lower back is now shifted forward and away from the seat’s lumbar support.
What about seat height?
The overall vertical adjustment of the seat is also important. If your feet can’t reach the floor that can cause problems by cutting off the blood supply in the back of the legs. This can be very painful, and over time can cause long-term health issues. This is a common problem for female or shorter drivers in general. Many trucks are built for big guys, so sometimes smaller people get forgotten about.
Why don’t some fleets put a priority on seat comfort? Is it because some view ergonomic seats as luxury items?
Yes, that can be a problem. A very price-conscious fleet might choose a fixed seat with no vertical adjustment because it’s the cheapest thing they can put in the truck. Certainly as you add features the prices go up, but what these fleets may not be realizing is that they’re costing themselves money down the road if they’re creating a driver who has health problems because of the seat. But remember, just because it has all the features doesn’t automatically make it a good quality seat. As I said, it can have great lumbar support, but that won’t do much if the seat is adjusted too high or too low. There aren’t comfort standards for seats to be built to, so it’s kind of a minefield.
What are some of the seat features you’d recommend?
Well, you can’t fit a wide range of sizes of people with a fixed seat. So if a fleet is interested in providing good accommodation for all of its drivers, it’s going to have seats with vertical adjustment. Air ride seats are also much more comfortable because the air will provide a little shock absorption so the driver doesn’t get banged to death going down the road. Plus, your seats should feature fore-aft adjustment, which allows you to slide the seat forward or back so you can get close enough to or far enough away from the pedals, adjustable lumbar support, and sufficient seat back recline. Finally, a tall seat back is preferred, to provide enough head restraint to prevent whiplash. Those features are a good star and can be requested during the specing process.

Structured Financing Can Pay Dividends Down the Road
Consider Building More Equity Early in the Term to Increase Cash Flow and Provide More Value Come Trade-in Time
The sooner a truck owner builds equity into his equipment, the sooner all parties can benefit: For the owner, it offers leverage if he needs to refinance or take some equity out of his truck. For the manufacturer and the dealer, the more equity the customer has in his purchase, the more receptive he’ll be to trading up for new equipment. And lastly it helps the lenders, who are more able to accommodate clients’ requests for re-writes, extensions and modifications to loan agreements when their collateral is worth more than the loan balance.
The most obvious way to build equity in your truck is to put down a large down payment Day One. And while that’s an easy concept to understand, it can also be tough to accomplish—especially for owner-operators or small businesses. But according to Pat Moulden, an Account Manager from GE Capital Solutions, which recently celebrated its 21st anniversary as Navistar Canada’s finance partner, not enough truck owners consider the idea of structuring their equipment financing to meet their specific business needs.
“Most lenders today have the capability of tailoring lease/loan agreements to match cash flow and in turn, build additional equity,” he says. “However, very few customers take advantage of this product offering”.
What is the primary reason for building equity into your equipment on the front end? It’s all about cash flow. Think about it: Through the initial few years of owning a truck, your concerns are typically limited to routine maintenance, oil changes, and the like. So, rather than paying $2,520 a month for five years, why not consider paying $2,900 for the first three years, and then $1,800 for the remaining two? “That way, when the truck gets to the point where it needs a bit of attention—say, perhaps an inframe or new tires—you can enjoy $1,100 or so in cash flow relief because you’ve made higher payments at the beginning of the term,” explains Moulden.
Who Should Consider Structured Financing?
While anybody can take advantage of structured financing—and indeed, it can be helpful for any size business or fleet—according to Moulden, once a business reaches a certain level of sophistication with its finances there are probably diminishing returns. He says owner-operators or small fleets (say, 15 or 20 power units), any business with hands-on management, will likely find some sort of structured finance beneficial.
“For the independent guy, it can make a huge difference,” he adds. “By making heavier payments early on, he can typically trade-up on a truck 42 months into the loan and enjoy significant trade equity. But if he finances his new tractor with 10 percent down over five years [without making heavier payments early], it can be questionable whether you’re in equity even after Year Four.” Most operators will look to trade-up units without digging into their pockets for an additional down payment. And by accelerating the repayment as described above, this becomes a reality.
“The whole idea is, out the door, today’s trucks can run virtually maintenance free. So why not capitalizes on that, so when the truck starts costing you money you can operate at a lower monthly payment?” says Moulden.
Seasonal Benefits
Structured financing can provide potential benefits for seasonal businesses as well. For example: If you know a certain time of year is going to be slow (say a landscaping firm that lags in the winter), rather than struggling to make a payment, you can work with your lender to schedule a reduced payment during those months. “Most lenders are willing to structure your finance contracts to meet your needs,” says Moulden. “They understand the revenue streams of most businesses are not flat month in and month out. Furthermore, the customer who understands this often has a better grasp of their operation and is more likely to be successful in the long term.”
The bottom line is you should consider all facets of your business when it comes to arranging financing: Revenue streams, peak seasons, slow seasons. And in the case of those who cannot afford a large down payment, it may not be wise to get accustomed to a maintenance-free, brand new truck at a certain monthly cost—and then find you need to put additional funds into the truck during that fourth or fifth year of the financing, but still have to make the same set payment.
“Sometimes it’s wise to put yourself a little under the heat,” advises Moulden. “You’ll thank yourself down the road when you have that lower payment.”
